In 1985, about a full year before Nintendo released Metroid, Namco released an arcade machine called Baraduke. In it, you play a space warrior in an identity-concealing suit named Kissy, who must fight their way through the interior of a planet to defeat a bunch of creepy bio-horror aliens, and who on completion of the game takes off their helmet to reveal they are in fact a beautiful woman.
Kissy would have gone down in gaming history as a pre-Samus Aran footnote, a less successful attempt at a Ripley-inspired heroine, if not for Namco's slightly random decision to later incorporate her into the Mr. Driller universe, revealing her full name to be Masuyo "Kissy" Tobi, and that she was the ex-wife of original Dig Dug protagonist Taizo Hori, and mother to his three children, including Mr. Driller main character Susumu Hori. She has retired from the United Galaxy Space Force, and is now an author.
