Charlie Chaplin: One More Go
I remember watching some of the comedy movies made by Charlie Chaplin in my childhood, when things were a bit more simple.
The double takes, the gag comedy, the piano playing in the background. There were no words (until the latter movies that came out). Comedy was something you saw, not something you heard. It was something that you experienced by watching the doings of a character that suffered great tragedy and somehow either escaped it in the nick of time or kept going as if nothing happened.
If only I had Charlie's wit and be able to handle any situation with grace. If only I had his luck and escape things in the nick of time. If only I had, at the very least, his strength and resolve in going on no matter what pie landed in your face or what punch connected to your jaw. May I find solace in knowing that I've made it this far and may I laugh and smile and take joy in remembering simpler times at the sound of a piano and the dance of peril of the great comedian Charlie Chaplin.
