Hires Fix: Tips and Tricks for on-site illu-based generation

TLDR:

Use these resources to enable more stable hires and reduce cost:

Recommended settings: euler a, steps 10, cfg 1-2, denoise 0.4

Also, you can hires multiple times with the initial hires at high denoise to add details and subsequent hires with equal or lower denoise to enhance the img.

Hi people, this article is for on-site usage of illu/NAI based model (maybe Pony as well?), hopefully it can help you improve the quality of your images. If you already know about hires fix, there will be some resources that can help you further.

WHAT IS HIRES?

Hires in this article is hires fix img2img workflow (figure 1). It is used to upscale an img and enhance/change it. How it does this is with denoising, through which it degrades the img back into noise and regenerates it. Depending on the 'denoise' parameter will the img change a little or a lot. Low denoise (0.1-0.3) sharpens the img without altering much details; moderate (0.3-0.6) sharpens the img and adds more details; high (>0.6) changes the img while keeping the composition.

Figure 2. Left to right: initial gen, 0.3 denoise, 0.6, 0.9

As you can see, the initial gen eyes, texture, shoulder logo is poorly resolved. These are solved via hires. At low denoise, img details remain the same, but better drawn. While at moderate denoise, there are additional details as well as some changes, notice the horn is single and the little stub is gone, as well as the shoulder logo changing. Finally, at high denoise, the img changes but keep the composition.

However, hires is not without flaws, sometimes there are just too many details or there are too many artifacts, light particles, or very visible in the case of high denoise of 0.9, additional fingers, and deformed chest. So the question is how do we fix it?

TIPS AND TRICKS

Shout out to @ecaj for letting me know about these resources. These should be use only when hires:

Recommended settings: euler a, steps 10, cfg 1-2, denoise 0.4

Stable hires fix enables high denoise without the deformation. DMD2 enables low denoise, low cost hires as it can get expensive. Better hand should be use if hand problem is still persistent.

Figure 3. Left to right: initial gen, hires fix with the mentioned resources and settings 0.3, 0.6, 0.9

From figure 3, we can see no deformation of bodypart even at high denoise. However, there are more artifacts. Reducing the weight of dmd2 can help with this.

A trick I like to use with hires is to do multiple hires. An initial gen follows by moderate denoise hires to add details, then a subsequent lower denoise to sharpen the img further. These are particularly useful when doing wide shot.

And that is all, if you have any question, feel free to ask, and if you have other tips, please share in the comment :D.
