Introduction

Hello, great community. I know morale has been low lately for reasons so well circulated that I don’t even need to delve into it again. We’ve seen friends, followers and talent leave us. It’s been sad, sorry and for some, downright depressing. But are we not men and women who are supposed to be torchbearers of a creative movement? We press on, with fortitude, hope and perseverance. In my corner of the globe, on the northern latitudes, midwinter is closing in and daylight fades. We have an annual symbol for a light of hope that shines when darkness has descended: Christmas.

In tandem with the honorable darkroast175696, we will each serve you with an Advent calendar for this annus horribilis year of 2025, in the hopes of giving us all some cheer, joy and a merry Christmas. I call upon this community to join us in making your own advent calendar to share with the rest of us to enjoy when you have your morning coffee, your breakfast wine or whatever you take for kicks or recovery.

What’s that old drunk talking about?

Advent is the period leading up to Christmas, a setting of anticipation. The practice of advent calendars comes from Lutheran Germany, and has spread to many parts of the world. The printed advent calendars have been around for over a century, and feature 24 doors that can be opened, once on every day (1st to 24th of December) with a small motif behind it, each building anticipation of Christmas to come. Lately, advent calendars have been co-opted by commercial actors, with each door revealing a piece of chocolate, a cosmetic or a toy. Personally, I enjoy exchanging a beer calendar with someone of good taste.
