The Z-Image model, particularly the Z-Image-Turbo variant, is a powerful new entrant in the world of AI image generation, offering photorealistic quality and sub-second inference latency on powerful hardware. The good news is that you don't need an expensive local GPU to experience its speed!

By leveraging ComfyUI's modular node-based interface on a Google Colab notebook, you can access powerful cloud GPUs (like the free Tesla T4) to run Z-Image workflows for free.

  • Get a Google Account: You need a Google account to access Google Colab.

  • Open a ComfyUI Colab Notebook: Search for a reliable, up-to-date ComfyUI Colab notebook (many are available on GitHub or community sites).

  • Ensure GPU Runtime: This step is crucial.

    • In the Colab menu, go to Runtime > Change runtime type.

    • Under Hardware accelerator, select GPU (usually a Tesla T4 on the free tier).

    • Note: Free Colab usage is limited and sessions will eventually time out, so save your work frequently.

  • Install Z-Image Turbo: Run the first cell to clone the ComfyUI repository, install necessary Python dependencies, models and set up the environment.

  • The main diffusion model checkpoint (z-image-turbo-fp8-e4m3f.safetensors).

  • The required text encoder file (qwen_3_4b.safetensors).

  • Select weight dtype (fp8_e4m3fn_fast)

  • Run ComfyUI GUI: This cell starts the ComfyUI server in the cloud and creates a public tunnel so you can access the GUI from your web browser.

  • Access the GUI: After the server starts, a public link will appear (e.g., https://xxxxxx.trycloudflare.com). Click this link to open the ComfyUI interface in a new tab.
