Removing payment options removes supporters

I understand that platforms sometimes have to change payment providers. That happens. But the current decision to make cryptocurrency the only way to purchase Yellow Buzz and Memberships effectively removes a number of paying users from the platform. And I believe that might not have been the intention.

The problem for users like me

I live in Germany. Here, cryptocurrency transactions are not just simple purchases. They come with documentation and tax implications. Every crypto transaction must be recorded, and because cryptocurrency values fluctuate, even small transactions can theoretically create taxable gains or losses.

That means even a simple Buzz purchase can require tracking exchange rates, documenting the transaction value, storing transaction history, and potentially reporting gains caused by price fluctuations. This turns what used to be a simple purchase into a financial transaction that needs to be tracked.

And Germany is not the only country with these rules. Many countries have introduced similar tax regulations around cryptocurrency. For users who simply want to support creators with small amounts, this creates unnecessary complexity.

Personal reasons for avoiding crypto

There is also another reason why crypto is not an option for me. I made the personal decision to stay away from cryptocurrency entirely. Not because I don't understand it, but because it tends to trigger a kind of gambling behaviour for me. I noticed that pattern and chose to step away from it. So for me this is not about convenience. Crypto is simply not something I want to interact with anymore.

Supporting creators is no longer possible

I enjoy supporting creators on Civitai. Buzz allowed me to tip posts, support models and participate in memberships. Over the past few months alone, I have spent several hundred euros on Buzz, simply to distribute it across posts, models and creators I appreciated.

I genuinely enjoy doing that. Supporting people, encouraging creativity and giving something back to the community is something that matters to me.

But if Buzz can only be purchased through crypto, then I simply cannot buy Buzz anymore. Which means I cannot support creators financially, I cannot participate in memberships, and I cannot contribute to the ecosystem the way I used to.

So the result is simple. I go from being a paying supporter to someone who simply cannot contribute financially anymore.

It also affects Bounties

Another feature affected by this change are Bounties. Bounties are one of the most interesting community features on Civitai. They allow users to create challenges and events where creators can earn Yellow Buzz as a reward.

But if I cannot purchase Buzz anymore, I also cannot fund Bounties. Which means fewer community events and fewer incentives for creators to participate in collaborative challenges. So the impact is not only on individual support. It also affects community-driven activities.

Other platforms manage this differently

Many creator platforms operate in similar spaces and still manage to offer accessible payment options. Platforms like DeviantArt or Patreon allow users to support creators using standard payment methods such as credit cards.

So it raises an honest question: why is cryptocurrency suddenly the only option here? Because from the outside this creates an impression that may not be intended. Restricting payments to crypto creates barriers for users in countries with complex tax rules, for users who prefer traditional payment systems, and for users who simply do not want to interact with cryptocurrency.

A concern some users might have

From a user perspective, this kind of change can also lead to speculation. Some people may wonder if the platform is trying to distance itself from certain types of content that traditional payment providers sometimes restrict, particularly NSFW content. If that were the case, it would honestly be better to communicate that openly. Communities usually handle transparency much better than uncertainty.

I want to support this platform

This article is not written out of anger. It is written because I would like to continue supporting creators on this platform. But right now the only available payment method removes that possibility for me.

I hope alternative payment options will return in the future. Because right now the unintended message feels like this: supporting creators is welcome - but only if you are willing and able to use cryptocurrency.
