Same Technology, Different Target

Open CivitAI right now and search for LoRAs. You will find thousands. Anime style. Watercolor style. "Like Ghibli." "Like Makoto Shinkai." "Oil painting look." "Impressionist."

Nearly all of them are style LoRAs.

They change how an image looks — the line weight, the color palette, the level of abstraction, the overall mood. Apply a Ghibli-style LoRA and your output feels like Ghibli. Apply a watercolor LoRA and edges soften, colors bleed. These are powerful tools. They work.

But here is a question most users never ask:

After applying a style LoRA, touch the surface with your eyes. Does it feel like anything?

The Ghibli-style output has Ghibli's palette and composition. But the surface — the actual material of every object in the scene — still feels the same as every other AI image. Smooth. Uniform. Digital plastic.

That is because style LoRAs and texture LoRAs solve fundamentally different problems.


What a Style LoRA Learns

A style LoRA learns "what is depicted."

More precisely, it learns the visual grammar of a particular aesthetic:

  • Color relationships (warm shadows, desaturated highlights)

  • Line quality (thick outlines, no outlines, sketchy hatching)

  • Composition tendencies (centered subjects, wide negative space)

  • Level of abstraction (photorealistic, cel-shaded, painterly)

When you train a style LoRA, you feed it complete images that share these visual characteristics. The LoRA extracts the patterns that make "this style" distinct from "all other styles."

The success metric is straightforward: Does the output look like that style?

This is valuable. It is also not the whole picture.


What a Texture LoRA Learns

A texture LoRA learns "how a surface interacts with light."

Not the image. The surface itself.

  • How thick paint catches light on one edge and casts a micro-shadow on the other

  • How mineral pigment scatters light differently from acrylic

  • How gold leaf shifts between warm and cool depending on viewing angle

  • How canvas weave creates a rhythm of tiny elevations beneath the paint

When you train a texture LoRA, you do not feed it complete paintings. You feed it surface fragments — close-up crops of material behavior, stripped of composition and subject.

The success metric is different from style: Does your hand want to reach out and touch it?

If the answer is no, the texture LoRA has failed — regardless of how beautiful the image looks.


The Confusion

Most people assume that a "style" includes "texture." If you apply an oil painting style LoRA, surely the output should have the texture of oil paint?

It does not. Here is why.

A style LoRA trained on complete oil paintings learns that oil paintings tend to have warm color harmonies, visible brushwork patterns, and rich darks. It reproduces these as visual motifs — flat representations of what oil paint looks like in a photograph.

But the actual physical behavior of oil paint — the way thick impasto creates real shadows, the way varnish layers create depth you can almost see into, the way a palette knife leaves a sharp ridge that catches raking light — none of this is captured. Because these are not visual patterns. They are physical phenomena.

A photograph of an oil painting and the oil painting itself are fundamentally different objects. A style LoRA learns from the photograph. A texture LoRA attempts to learn from the object.


The "Wet Surface" Problem

Here is an observation you can verify right now.

Generate any image with any model. Look at the surfaces — any surface. Skin. Metal. Fabric. Stone. Wood.

They all look slightly wet.

Not drenched. Not obviously glossy. But there is a sheen, a uniformity to how light interacts with every material, as if everything in the scene has been lightly misted with water. Skin reflects light like porcelain. Dry stone has the sheen of polished concrete. Cotton fabric has a subtle gloss it should not have.

I call this the Wet problem. Every AI-generated surface defaults to a slightly specular, slightly too-smooth, slightly too-uniform interaction with light.

Stacking style LoRAs will not fix this. You can make the image look like Rembrandt, like Monet, like a daguerreotype — the surfaces will still be wet. Because the Wet problem is not a style problem. It is a surface problem. A texture problem.

The question of why this happens — and how to counter it — is the subject of my book. But recognizing that it exists is the first step.

That last row is the point.


Why Almost No One Makes Texture LoRAs

Style LoRAs are intuitive. Collect images that look alike, train, done. The feedback loop is fast — you can see immediately whether the output matches the target style.

Texture LoRAs require a completely different way of seeing.

You must look at a painting and ignore what it depicts. Ignore the subject, the composition, the color scheme. Look only at the surface. Ask: what is the paint doing? How does light behave here versus there? Where is there thickness? Where is there transparency? What would this feel like under my fingertip?

This is how conservators look at art. It is how material scientists examine samples. It is not how most AI users have been trained to see.

Then, the training process itself inverts common intuition. Where style LoRA training benefits from detailed tags that describe the aesthetic, texture LoRA training benefits from removing tags — deliberately leaving information unwritten so that material behavior concentrates in the trigger word rather than dissipating across labeled categories.

This is counterintuitive. It requires a methodology most guides do not teach, because most guides are written for style.


Using Both Together

Style LoRAs are not inferior. They solve a different problem. The ideal workflow uses both:

  1. A style LoRA to establish the visual language — palette, line quality, atmosphere

  2. A texture LoRA to give every surface in the scene physical credibility — weight, grain, depth

Style gives the image its identity. Texture gives it its body.

Without style, the image has no character. Without texture, the image has no substance. Most AI images today have character but no substance — because the tools for substance barely exist yet.


Where TextureLoRALab Comes In
