I was just waiting for the script to run automatically, so I browsed through the works of those "hand-drawn artists" I’d saved earlier. After looking through them, I couldn’t help but sigh—these paintings are absolutely incredible. Even if I used top-tier models and the highest-quality prompts to generate images, I could never achieve that meticulous, supremely creative effect they deliver.
I used to collect these images out of practical and utilitarian motives. I’d save whatever I liked, then do a major cleanup every once in a while. Over the years, my scattered collection went from tens of thousands of images down to just a few hundred. I used to work in photography, spending every day saving and viewing pictures. But with the rapid development of AI image generation, I’ve grown increasingly uninterested in realistic photography. Especially the portrait photography I used to do—it just feels so boring in hindsight. (I believe work itself is boring; boredom is inevitable, but I can make conscious choices under relative circumstances.)
I once studied art history for a while, and modern art history is my favorite. That era can only be described as brilliant—painters and their wildly creative works emerged one after another, a true flourishing of diverse styles. By contrast, most contemporary art is garbage to me. (I know some contemporary artists have fantastic ideas and creations that I really admire; I’m talking about the majority, not all.)
I think these "anime-style" artists perfectly capture that vibrant, colorful spirit of the modern art era. Each has their own distinct style, and they wield endless expressive techniques across mediums—traditional drawing, watercolor, ink wash, oil painting, digital brushwork, and more. The content and forms of their works leave me utterly stunned. They paint the scenes in their imagination by hand, bringing them to life for viewers. It’s just freaking amazing! AI will only replace mediocre artists, much like how it affected me in photography.
The visual elements in my current images—those "tags"—are basically "derived" from those artists’ works. And I’m not alone; I’d say 90 percent of the visual elements used by today’s AI image creators are "derived" in the same way. I don’t see this as inherently good or bad, nor worthy of moral or value judgment. Extracting, blending, and reprocessing visual elements, as well as mixing and matching artistic styles, are all acts of re-creation. Having studied art history, this is something I can easily accept. But I can never "derive" the creativity and execution of those genuine artists.
AI is merely a tool. Generating images mechanically only numbs the mind, making you no different from those mediocre painters.
Just some random thoughts when I was bored.
