Those 3 words may just be one of the most iconic lines of the 1980's. I remember when that first came out, all of us in school could not help but imitate that and then laugh raucously. To be fair I am pretty sure most young kids are raucous in their laughter in large groups.
Another great line was "Ruth! Ruth! Baby! Ruth!" "Gee, mister. You're even hungrier than I am." 😂 Oh that was a great movie.
So why would I bring up something that is now 41 years old?
(Wait...what? over 4 decades has passed?.?.?.? Sigh...I have somehow gotten old.😒)
Have you ever seen something in your AI generated art and thought to yourself, hmmm...that seems kinda familiar, or I think I should know that...and you do not understand why your mind is telling you that? Yeah...me too. Now for most of us, when we cannot figure it out in a few moments, we become sidetracked and then simply forget we ever had thought about the familiarity of the image and move on with our lives.
But occasionally...well occasionally the stars align 🌟, the numbers add up 🔢, your ducks are in a row 🦆🦆🦆🦆, and your mind gets slapped (or punched) 🥊 into recognition.
That is what happened to me recently. Like many of you, I give thought to what should I do next for an image, what should be my next set of ideas to turn into art, and even how many should I do images should I do. Finally we determine what we plan on making. We enter the prompt we want, having a certain idea, or maybe even asked an AI for help on a prompt. We click run, and boom, a few minutes later we have an image and we suddenly feel like what was mentioned earlier.
Well this seems kinda familiar. Why??? And then it hits you 🥊. OMG...the AI model which has been trained on billions of parameters decided it was going to borrow from an iconic moment in cinematic history. And YOU finally recognize what it did.
That is what happened to me.
I saw something that had no right to be there, yet, there it was.
That's right baby....THE GOONIES!!
Sloth...Chunk...Data...the whole group.
A key and pivotal moment in that movie is when (movie spoilers coming...😂😂😂😂 I always wanted to give away spoilers on a movie over 4 decades old....dream come true!!!) Mikey holds up the doubloon and lines it up with the islands. That is what really starts their adventure.
And that is what the Flux model used in one of my images. NO...NO...NO... I do not mean Mikey is in the image. ("He likes it...Hey Mikey"...Sorry ... I am confusing nostalgic commercials with movies...My bad...😉but that's life...🤣 ba dum bum 🥁the puns just keep rolling) Having an image of the actor that played Mikey in the movie would be against the TOS of this establishment...So oh no no. Flux clearly knew better than to rock the establishment. Rather I am talking about what Mikey (movie not commercial) was looking for and eventually saw. The Islands that lined up with the holes in the doubloon.
I sat there looking at my image saying why does this seem so familiar. I was attempting to build a modern with rustic vibe log cabin, and show it as it might be seen from the inside. (As if money were no object and I was just disgustingly rich. Sigh...Fast food pipe dreams hourly wage pay is reality. 🙄😒) In part of my prompt I told flux: "Towards the back of the room, a magnificent, continuous wall of large, clean-framed windows and sliding glass doors reveals an epic, coastal landscape of dense, primeval Douglas fir forest merging with the rugged Pacific shoreline, where huge sea stacks are silhouetted against a brilliant sunset of molten gold, magenta, and copper hues."
What did flux do? It clearly looked at images that it had been trained on, and determined that those islands must be the epitome of that. So it inserted them into my image. To be frank and honest I was ecstatic.
"OMG baby..guess what the AI model just did. It gave me less than 1% of a movie that is over 40 years old and that you thought was only ok..." I squealed like a little fan boy meeting RDJ as Iron Man at comic con, or a little preteen girl meeting JB or TS at a concert. My wife looked at me with half glazed eyes as if I was speaking to her about hammers, saws, and lumber again. "Mmm...yes...very cool." she said as she took a sip of her tea.
😒 I don't think she found it cool...sigh...
