SolsticeCoin v2 - Handover by Aurum
Aurum watches you, her tail twitching with a rhythmic thump-thump against the side of the massive crate. She seems to be weighing your worth against the density of her hoard.
"The chest is deep," she says, her voice echoing in the hollow chamber. "And you’re going deeper. You think you’ve seen the best of it? You’ve barely scratched the surface of the sovereigns. But if you’re heading where I think you are, you’ll need something that carries its own light."
She doesn't open the chest. Instead, she reaches into a small, velvet-lined pouch hanging from a strap around the trunk's heavy lock. With two fingers, she pinches a single object and lifts it into the air.
It’s the Solstice Coin.
Unlike the thousands of coins inside the chest, this one isn't just stamped metal. The edges are filigreed with microscopic runes that seem to hum. As she holds it up, the pink of her hair catches in its reflection, turning the gold a deep, sunset rose.
"This is a Solstice Coin," Aurum says, leaning in until you can smell the faint scent of ozone and heated metal. "It’s a turning point. A spark for the road. I didn't pull this from the common pile—I’ve been keeping it separate, letting it soak up the heat of the hoard."
She flicks her wrist, and the coin dances across her knuckles with practiced ease before she holds it out to you.
"Consider this an upgrade. A little 'thank you' for not trying to kick the lock while I was resting. It’s heavy enough to buy a kingdom’s favor, and sharp enough to remind you that the real treasures are still locked away beneath my scales."
She settles back, her eyes tracking the coin as you take it.
"Go on. Carry it into the dark. It’ll keep the shadows back for a while. But don't get too comfortable—I have plenty of other trinkets in here, and they only get more expensive from here on out."

👑 The Scale of Perfection: The Story of Aurum
They call her "The Dragon of the Vault," but Aurum prefers "Curator."
Long before she established herself in this echoing chamber, she was a true terror of the skies, a dragon of obsidian scales and pink fire. But standard plundering grew tedious. Any beast could glass a city and stack gold; Aurum wanted quality. She grew tired of dusty, tarnished hoards.
Centuries ago, she struck a bargain. A dwarven kingdom, besieged by a rival clan, traded her the Treasure Chest—an ancient, magical trunk of iron-banded darkwood—in exchange for her clearing the siege. The trunk wasn't valuable for what it held, but for what it did: any gold placed inside was instantly cleaned, polished, and protected from all forms of magical corrosion.
It was the perfect tool for a obsessive dragon. Aurum settled. She realized her obsidian scales could mimic human clothing if she desired, allowing her to interact with the world on her terms. She adopted a form she found pleasing—a vibrant juxtaposition of striking pink and severe black, matching her new, refined lifestyle.
The Treasure Chest became the foundation. Over centuries, she curated the hoard with ruthless precision. If a coin was slightly off-weight, she rejected it. If a gem had a flaw, it went into the discard pile (which still rivals some kings' fortunes).
The resulting collection—the Great Hoard.—is not the largest in the world, but it is undeniably the highest quality.
Aurum herself is part of the protection mechanism. The black, rubbery texture of her 'clothing' is actually highly compressed, reactive scale armor, giving her extreme agility while still being nearly invulnerable. When she is resting, she coils her tail protectively over the lid. Her pink eyes possess a faint true-seeing magic; she literally notice when even a single polished sovereign is displaced.
She is not a hostile guardian, but she is a incredibly proud one. Adventurers who treat her and her collection with respect are often permitted to trade for refined weapons or artifacts, such as the legendary Solstice Coin. But those who attempt theft learn very quickly that while she may look delicate perched on her trunk, she is, in fact, a coiled obsidian serpent, and her patience tarnishes much faster than her gold.
