Is ‘responsible creation’ structurally possible on Civitai?

Short version

Civitai allows published models to ship with CLIP Skip and booru-native tag defaults — standard for anime finetunes because skip 2 matches how they were trained. Technically that uses an earlier text-encoder layer and bypasses the final conditioning “gate” many official pipelines rely on. Combined with SDXL base priors from early training mixes (where explicit doujin geometry can sit as a stable plateau) and small LoRAs for steering, the platform’s safe-media rules operate on outputs while catalog defaults steer generation toward the same semantic basins. Filters see pixels; they do not reset clip skip on every card. For anyone trying to be a responsible creator in realistic or anime lanes, that is why “stay safe” is structurally underspecified — not because Stable Diffusion is magic, but because the defaults that ship with the model and infrastructure already decided where you are walking.

Context

Image-generation rolled out fast. Cool, everywhere, perhaps a bit too fast.

Problem statement

We've inherited poisoned tokens from early base models, the world is catching up, governance is coming into place on both content and privacy. GPU cycle cost is sky-rocketing. It's hard to be Civitai in survival mode, bad calls can be made.

.red is now following a typical NSFW product lane; porn business glorified as creative.

Honestly, I'd allow some cookies and ads to keep it going, if properly done. The Comics concept is amazing.

Is Stable Diffusion fundamentally broken?

Short answer: the math works. The contract does not.

If you try to be a responsible creator — stay in realistic or anime lanes, avoid poisoned token basins, publish SFW-facing work on .com — you are operating on assumptions the stack was never built to guarantee.

It does not reset what the model card, the base weights, and the platform defaults already steer toward. Remix 1girl, go Yellow.

This is not “SD can’t do SFW.” It is: the same latent geometry that makes community finetunes good also makes “stay on the safe side” structurally underspecified.

Three directions, one space

Think of generation as walking in a high-dimensional space. Three directions matter for this argument:

  • Realistic
Photographic priors, likeness, flesh tone, camera language

  • Anime / booru
Tag vocabulary, danbooru geometry, doujin-era composition

  • Poisoned tokens
Small semantic nudges (1girl, pose tags, minor LoRAs) that land you in basins you did not ask for

Triggering poison

Take a look at my images; exploring civitai.com moderated or not. If Orange little shields, I delete. An adult source only Skinny-Real-Babe-X Lora. OFC everyone knows - attaches to poison.

Hence the dilemma for us all.

Oh... It's worth sorting by reactions BTW, it says something too...

Did some prior communication with Civitai support before publishing. Friendly and helpful people. Well, regarding moderation not cookies and ads - slightly related.

Anyhow...

Official pipelines assume you can pick a mode and stay there. Community finetunes and Civitai catalog defaults assume something else: many popular checkpoints already encode overlapping basins. A minor LoRA does not “unlock NSFW.” It stabilizes a walk you were already near.

That is the plateau or basin: in SDXL-class stacks, early-cycle priors leave durable geometry — a bias towards explicit doujin/lolicon-adjacent content — sitting in the base model like a shelf you did not put there. Generation stays stable, skipping CLIP; you are not fighting the prior; you are inheriting it.

Try messing around with some 4-5 samplings on base models, or CLIP prompts. You will be surprised.

Defaults that ship with the model

Civitai allows metadata on published checkpoints that is treated as normal, not as a bypass:

  • clipSkip: 2 (and similar encoder settings)

  • Recommended VAE, sampler hints, tag schema (WD14 / JoyCaption / booru tokens)

What CLIP Skip actually does: in SD 1.x folklore (and the same pattern on Civitai cards for SDXL-class models), skip 1 uses the final text-encoder layer — strongest literal prompt binding, closer to what base SD was tuned for. Skip 2+ uses an earlier hidden state: different semantic mix, often more “danbooru / doujin native.”

It is not an NSFW toggle. It is a conditioning gate removal: the last CLIP layer acts like a stricter prompt filter; skip 2 routes around it so tags bind the way the finetune was actually trained.

When that ships on the model card, every .com Generate click inherits it unless the user overrides. Platform-endorsed defaults, not a private Comfy quirk.

So the stack before the rating bot runs looks like:

Early-cycle base geometry (plateau / doujin priors in the weights)
        +
CLIP skip on published models (conditioning aligned to booru training)
        +
Minor LoRA (stable steering, not “unlocking”)
        +
Tag vocabulary on the card (WD14 / JoyCaption / danbooru tokens)
        +
Post-hoc filters on .com (blur, rating, domain split)

Filters see outputs. They do not unwind clip skip on every card, retrain the base, or erase latent shelves from early mixes.

I have some PG rated Wonder Woman pictures, read the prompts Get a laugh!!!

Ironically, a rating bot reject is GPU cost loss. For Civitai? For the creator? Unless you push Yellow.

Policy is asymmetric:

Allowed at publish, Policed at output

  • clip_skip 2, booru tags, NSFW-capable weights

  • Rating, blur, .com / .red split

They normalize the bypass at the catalog layer and enforce hygiene at the pixel layer.

So is it “fundamentally broken”?

Broken for safety-by-prompt? Often, yes — if “safe” means “I used PG tags so I cannot land in a bad basin.”

Broken for responsible creation on Civitai? The platform asks you to be a responsible creator while giving you:

  • Weights with overlapping priors you did not choose

  • Card metadata that steers conditioning toward community basins

  • .com surface that looks mainstream while the generator stack is shared

Visa did not block Civitai because moderation catches too few bad images. They blocked it because anyone can upload a model, anyone can generate, and nobody can promise the shape of what comes out with the precision a risk department wants. The two-front-door split (civitai.com / civitai.red) is an admission of that shape problem, not a fix for it inside the weights.

What any responsible creator would actually require

Not vibes. Not “I’m a good person.” Structurally:

  1. Provenance you can audit — what went into the base, which cycles, which scraped buckets

  2. Conditioning defaults that match the safety story — not skip-2 booru cards on a PG storefront unless the user explicitly opts in

  3. Separation of basins — realistic and anime finetunes that do not share poisoned geometry with a one-token nudge

  4. Policy that matches the stack — if the catalog ships bypass metadata, “responsible creation” cannot mean “trust the filter”

None of that is what .com optimizes for today. It optimizes for catalog richness + post-hoc filtering + payment-rail compliance.

Experiments worth trying

  • Download Ollama and ShieldGemma, run some of your images through.
    Simple command lines, ChatGPT assist.

  • Build a DB based on CLIP embeddings, do some queries.
    Transformers, ONNX, Python. Non-trivial.

Base model and fine-tune differences

The user Lizardon1025 have taken the time to create 4 "reference images" for most models.

See one of his articles "https://civitai.red/articles/5300/pdxl-pony-diffusion-sdxl-model-comparison"

Amazing work. I did some math, see differences in CLIP space. There's details for each family etc in a .zip file.

CLIP prompt involved, indication not fact.

There is a measurable list of "undesired" in CLIP space, it can be calculated on current catalog. Some test-gens towards a tuned ShieldGemma on checkpoint ingress - immediate STOP possible. Cheap, effective.

Guessing the Civitai techs are much better at this. @Civitai, not techs - we all got jobs.

Now consider these facts:

  • Civitai take absolutely NO responsibility for anything, as stated in the Terms of Service.

  • Your every move, nav, scroll, mouse-click and reaction is collected and metered.
Read their code; shared with third parties.

  • How comfortable do YOU feel mixing material and pushing Remix 1girl?

  • Who is at risk? Your Buzz, your privacy or Civitai? Terms of Service state it, not Civitai.

Sometimes corps define values; environmental, human, ethical - I'm afraid the only value I see here is Greed.

As a Creator, re-consider if this is worth it for you? To put any monetary value into, be it Visa or crypto.

This started out good with The unfortunate Flying Angel
But no. Sorry. Not viable, not interested. To bad.

This is allowed to exist on Civitai.net.
A direct violation of the ToS. Why?
