On July 30, 2026, Civitai announced changes to the Creator Program in "Creator Economy Update 2026: You Set the Price Now."
Summary of the New Creator Program:
Creator Program eligibility requirements:
A Creator Score of 40,000 or higher.
An active paid membership:
Bronze - $10 per month
Silver - $25 per month
Gold - $50 per month
Removal of the automatic 25% generation compensation:
Civitai previously added 25% to the price of each image generation as creator compensation. That amount was split between the checkpoint owner (50%) and the LoRA owners (the remaining 50%, divided equally).
License fees, replacing the 25% generation compensation:
Eligibility requires both the minimum Creator Score and a paid membership.
Eligible creators can set a fee charged for each image generated with a checkpoint or LoRA.
Creators can manage license fees for individual models or in bulk through Creator Studio.
Model sales:
Eligibility requires both the minimum Creator Score and a paid membership.
Eligible creators can set a price for access to a model, including generation and download access.
The number of models a creator can sell at one time is limited by membership tier:
Bronze - up to 10 models
Silver - up to 25 models
Gold - unlimited
Early Access:
The Early Access system remains unchanged.
The duration is based on Creator Score and ranges from 3 to 15 days.
During Early Access, users must pay the price set by the creator to generate with or download the model.
After Early Access expires, the model becomes available for generation and download without payment.
Creator compensation through the Compensation Pool:
The basic system remains unchanged.
The maximum amount of Buzz that can be banked each month is capped by membership tier:
Bronze - 100,000 Buzz
Silver - 125% of the creator's Peak Earning Month, capped at 1 million Buzz
Gold - 150% of the creator's Peak Earning Month
The total Compensation Pool for June 2026 was $26,903.
Banked Buzz determines each creator's relative share of the Compensation Pool.
Total Buzz banked in June 2026: 38,991,211
Creator compensation = (Buzz banked by the creator / total banked Buzz) x Compensation Pool
Example: 1,000 / 38,991,211 x $26,903 = approximately $0.689
At that rate, every 1,000 Buzz banked would return approximately $0.689.
For example, 100,000 banked Buzz would return approximately $68.90.
Purchased Buzz costs $1 per 1,000 Buzz. Based on the June 2026 conversion, this represents an effective 31.1% reduction from the purchase value when Buzz is converted into creator compensation.
June 2026 appears to have had a relatively favorable effective conversion rate; the effective reduction is often approximately 30% to 50%.
Positive Changes:
Allowing creators to sell models directly is a very positive step forward.
Allowing creators to set an exact fee for each generated image is also a valuable improvement.
Creator Studio provides useful analytics, information, and model-management tools.
Cosmetic shops are a welcome addition, provided that reviews focus on objective policy and technical requirements rather than subjective stylistic preferences.
Concerns and Proposed Adjustments:
Compensation for generated images:
The main concern is that Civitai may continue to make creators' models available in the generator while per-generation compensation is available only to creators who meet the Creator Score requirement and pay for a membership. As a result, a model can continue to create value for the platform and its users while its creator receives no compensation from those generations.
For many smaller creators, the income generated by license fees may not cover even the $10 monthly membership. Requiring creators to pay more each month than they are likely to earn in order to receive any generation compensation will discourage creators, particularly niche creators.
The previous automatic 25% compensation created a clear exchange: creators allowed their models to be used in the generator, and creators shared in the value generated from that use. Because the economic terms have materially changed, previous permission to use a model in the generator should not automatically be treated as permission for uncompensated use.
Proposed solution: Every creator whose model is available in the generator should be allowed to set a license fee, regardless of membership level. Alternatively, Civitai could fund a baseline generation fee. If a creator has not selected a fee, the model should receive a reasonable default rate comparable to the previous compensation system.
If Civitai does not provide compensation to creators who are not members, their models should be disabled in the generator by default unless they explicitly opt in to uncompensated use. Membership can reasonably provide advanced tools, higher limits, and additional benefits, but it should not be a prerequisite for receiving any compensation when the platform uses a creator's model.
In my view, some form of compensation for generated use is a fundamental part of a fair and sustainable creator program.
Model sales and listing limits:
Allowing models to remain on sale without a time limit can be especially valuable for niche models that earn gradually over time. However, fixed total limits of 10 models for Bronze and 25 for Silver substantially undermine the purpose of long-term model sales and make the feature little more than an extension of Early Access.
Once a creator reaches the limit, listing a new model requires removing an older paid model or releasing it for free. This prevents smaller creators from building a long-term catalog and undermines the purpose of allowing models to earn over a longer period.
Early Access has already shown that many individual models earn relatively small amounts. For those models, continued availability over time is often more important than a short initial sales period.
Proposed solution: Keep the Bronze and Silver limits, but apply them to the number of new paid models that can be added each month rather than to the creator's total catalog. Bronze members could add up to 10 new paid models per month, and Silver members could add up to 25.
Once a model version has been added for sale, it should remain for sale unless the creator chooses to release it for free. A membership lapse could pause the ability to add new paid listings, but it should not automatically make existing model files public.
I also suggest allowing creators without a membership to list a small number of paid models each month, such as three. This would let new creators test the system, accumulate earnings, and decide whether a paid membership offers sufficient value.
Protection from accidental or temporary membership lapses:
A temporary payment problem, an expired or replaced card, illness, travel, or a missed renewal should not cause a creator's paid models to become freely downloadable. Once files are released publicly, the result is effectively irreversible because they can be copied and redistributed elsewhere, particularly on Chinese sites that compete with Civitai.
This consequence is far greater than the missed membership payment and may make creators reluctant to trust the platform with work that took months or years to produce, only to have it released automatically.
Proposed solution: Sold models should never become free unless the creator chooses to release them for free.
If Civitai wants to address inactive creators, it can contact them by email and warn them that their models will be unpublished after three months. However, the models should never become free without the creator's consent.
Banked Buzz, cash-out restrictions, and inactive creators:
Civitai requires an active membership to bank Buzz, and even the Gold tier limits monthly banking to 150% of the creator's Peak Earning Month. A creator who cannot bank Buzz for several months may therefore accumulate a balance that would take several months of active membership to cash out.
Model popularity naturally declines over time, so inactive creators are unlikely to accumulate large amounts indefinitely.
They also cannot cash out substantial balances without paying for Gold membership and accepting an effective 30% to 50% cash-out reduction.
Buzz that remains in the system instead of being cashed out is beneficial to Civitai and does not harm other creators.
Depriving people of compensation for their work simply because they are not active on the site for some time is not acceptable. If creators take a few months off and return, they should not lose compensation they have already earned.
In general, inactive creators are not a major problem that justifies measures that punish all creators.
Minimum Changes That Would Address the Concerns:
Allow every creator to receive compensation for generator use, either through a creator-set license fee or a platform-funded default fee.
If uncompensated generator use remains, require explicit opt-in and disable affected models by default.
Apply sales limits to new models added each month, not to the creator's entire paid catalog.
Never make a paid model free because of a missed or canceled membership payment. Use notices and unlist the model only after a few months.
