Tutorial: How to Create 256-Color City Posters with SDXL and ComfyUI
A practical guide to generating, refining, and publishing stylized city artwork on Civitai
1. Project Overview
In this tutorial, we will create artistic city posters, urban skylines, historic cityscapes, and futuristic metropolises using the world trigger word and the 256_Color_Style LoRA.
The goal is to produce images featuring:
A distinctive, limited-color aesthetic.
Clean color separation and bold geometric shapes.
Recognizable architecture and balanced compositions.
Consistent visual styling across an image collection.
Reusable prompts and reproducible generation settings.
High-quality previews suitable for Civitai.
Important: A prompt can encourage a 256-color aesthetic, but it cannot guarantee exactly 256 distinct colors. To enforce a maximum of 256 colors, quantize the finished image using an image-editing tool.
2. Required Software
You will need:
ComfyUI: For generating images.
An SDXL checkpoint: A compatible base model.
256_Color_Style LoRA: The style model used in this tutorial.
GIMP or ImageMagick: For image refinement and palette quantization.
A web browser: For publishing your work on Civitai.
You can perform the entire image-generation and editing workflow locally using free software, without relying on cloud-based image generation.
3. Setting Up ComfyUI
Launch ComfyUI.
Load an SDXL checkpoint compatible with your LoRA.
Add a
Load LoRAnode.Connect the checkpoint and conditioning outputs to the appropriate SDXL nodes.
Set
strength_modelto 0.8 andstrength_clipto 0.8 as initial values.Set the image resolution to 1024 × 1024.
Enter the positive and negative prompts provided below.
Generate your first image and evaluate the resulting style.
If the style is too subtle, gradually increase the LoRA strength. If the architecture becomes excessively abstract or distorted, try reducing it.
4. Recommended Initial Settings
ParameterStarting valueBase modelSDXLResolution1024 × 1024Sampling steps30CFG5.5SamplerDPM++ 2MSchedulerKarrasLoRA model strength0.8LoRA CLIP strength0.8SeedFixed during testing
These settings are a starting point, not universal optimum values. Results depend on your checkpoint, LoRA, and ComfyUI workflow.
5. Main Positive Prompt
Use this prompt as the foundation for your entire collection.
world, 256 color style, cityscape poster, iconic urban skyline, beautiful architectural composition, historic buildings and modern skyscrapers, geometric shapes, limited color palette, 256-color aesthetic, clean color separation, bold graphic design, retro digital art, crisp edges, balanced composition, intricate architectural details, atmospheric depth, striking perspective, vibrant but harmonious colors, professional art poster, high contrast, visually rich, polished illustration
6. Main Negative Prompt
photorealistic, photograph, muddy colors, washed out colors, excessive gradients, blurry, out of focus, low resolution, jpeg artifacts, random color splashes, messy composition, distorted buildings, warped architecture, duplicated structures, malformed windows, inconsistent perspective, crooked horizon, cluttered details, text, letters, watermark, logo, frame, border, low quality
The negative prompt can help reduce common defects, but it cannot eliminate every architectural error or guarantee a precise color palette.
7. Create Five Different City Poster Themes
Keep the main prompt unchanged and add one of the following theme-specific descriptions.
A. Futuristic Megacity
futuristic megacity, towering skyscrapers, elevated highways, glowing windows, retro-futuristic atmosphere, monumental architecture
B. Historic City
historic European city, medieval towers, ornate facades, cobblestone streets, old town squares, charming architectural silhouettes
C. Coastal City
coastal city, waterfront skyline, colorful harbor, seaside buildings, boats, terraced architecture, bright Mediterranean atmosphere
D. Cyberpunk City
cyberpunk city, neon signs without readable text, dense urban skyline, futuristic streets, dramatic night lighting, retro digital aesthetic
E. Minimalist City
minimalist architectural poster, simplified buildings, flat geometric forms, large color blocks, clean negative space, elegant graphic composition
Keep the world trigger in your prompt. Maintaining consistent generation settings will make it easier to compare the different themes and identify which ones work best with your LoRA.
8. Generate a Consistent Collection
Follow this workflow for each theme:
Choose one of the five categories.
Generate four images using different seeds.
Select the strongest composition.
Keep the checkpoint, sampler, and LoRA strength consistent.
Change only the theme or seed when comparing results.
Reject images with distorted architecture, muddy colors, or weak compositions.
For your first collection, aim for 10–20 carefully selected images rather than publishing every generation without reviewing it.
9. Quantize the Image to a Maximum of 256 Colors
If you want the final image to contain no more than 256 distinct colors, you can use ImageMagick.
Install it on Ubuntu:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install imagemagickConvert your image to an indexed palette:
magick poster.png -dither FloydSteinberg -colors 256 PNG8:poster_256.pngThis creates a PNG using a palette of up to 256 colors.
Quantization can introduce banding or alter subtle gradients. Always compare the processed image with the original before publishing.
10. Prepare Your Images for Civitai
Before uploading each selected image:
Save a clean PNG and inspect it for visible artifacts.
Use a descriptive filename, such as
256-color-coastal-city-01.png.Keep the original positive and negative prompts.
Record the checkpoint, LoRA version, seed, and generation settings.
Review Civitai's current publishing requirements and content rules.
Verify that the licenses of your checkpoint and other models permit your intended use.
Choose preview images that clearly demonstrate the LoRA's distinctive style, even when displayed as small thumbnails.
11. Example Civitai Collection Description
Title: 256 Color City Posters — Retro Digital Architecture
Description:
Explore a collection of stylized city posters featuring urban skylines, futuristic metropolises, historic architecture, coastal towns, and cyberpunk environments.
Created with the 256_Color_Style LoRA for SDXL, this collection explores bold geometric forms, carefully separated colors, retro digital aesthetics, and striking architectural compositions.
From minimalist city illustrations to vibrant futuristic skylines, each image combines distinctive visual styling with a carefully composed urban scene.
Trigger word: world
Recommended usage: Use a compatible SDXL checkpoint, include the trigger word in your prompt, and adjust the LoRA strength to achieve your preferred visual result.
Results may vary depending on the base checkpoint, seed, prompt, and generation settings.
12. Final Quality-Control Checklist
Before publishing, confirm that:
The
worldtrigger is included in the prompt. The LoRA is loading and influencing the output correctly.
The intended color aesthetic is clearly visible.
The architecture has no obvious visual defects.
The composition remains readable as a thumbnail.
Palette quantization has been applied if required.
Prompts and generation settings have been saved.
The model licenses permit your intended use.
The description does not promise results the model cannot guarantee.
13. Improve Your Collection Over Time
Build a visually coherent collection with different subjects but a recognizable style. Use your strongest images as previews and preserve the prompts so other users can reproduce your results.
After your first generations, compare LoRA strengths of 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0. Choose the value that offers the best balance of style fidelity, architectural quality, and color variation.
Expected result: A curated collection of stylized urban posters ready for refinement and publication on Civitai, supported by a repeatable workflow for future generations.
