Turanga Leela is a central character in the animated television series Futurama. Voiced by Katey Sagal, she is the competent one-eyed mutant who serves as the spaceship captain and pilot for Planet Express.
Originally believed to be an alien, Leela's backstory reveals that she was born to mutant parents in the sewers of New New York. Because she appeared to be only mildly mutated with just one eye, her parents made the difficult decision to leave her at an orphanage on the surface to give her a chance at a better life. Growing up as an orphan, Leela faced loneliness and teasing due to her unique appearance.
As the captain of the Planet Express ship, Leela is often the voice of reason and responsibility among the crew, frequently saving Fry and Bender from their mishaps. Despite her tough exterior and occasional impatience, she is a caring individual who deeply values her friends and stands up for causes she believes in, such as freedom and the environment. Throughout the series, Leela grapples with her identity and eventually discovers the truth about her mutant heritage and reconnects with her parents. Her relationship with Fry is a significant arc of the show, evolving from friendship to romantic feelings.
