Carl "CJ" Johnson is the protagonist of the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He is voiced by actor and rapper Young Maylay.
Carl's story begins in Los Santos, where he returns after five years in Liberty City following the death of his mother in 1992. Upon his return, he finds his former gang, the Grove Street Families, in disarray and his friends and family struggling. He becomes entangled with corrupt police officers who attempt to frame him. Throughout the game, Carl works to restore the Grove Street Families' influence, uncover the truth behind his mother's death, and deal with betrayals from within his own circle. His journey takes him across the fictional state of San Andreas, involving him in various criminal enterprises, rival gang conflicts, and encounters with eccentric characters.
