Jack Vettriano (1951–2025) was a self-taught Scottish painter renowned for his evocative, cinematic scenes of romance, mystery, and nostalgia. Born in Methil, Fife, he began painting in the 1970s after receiving a set of watercolours as a gift. His breakthrough came in 1992 with The Singing Butler, which became one of the UK’s best-selling art prints.
Vettriano’s style is marked by dramatic lighting and elegantly dressed figures in ambiguous or intimate settings. Though critics often dismissed his work as sentimental or populist, he achieved immense commercial success and exhibited internationally—from London to Hong Kong and New York. He was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to visual arts.
