The concept of witches and black magic can be found in even the earliest civilizations. People believed that those accused conducted a range of wicked sins, from cursing their community to communing with evil spirits and the devil. Either by times of hardship or by planned accusations by rivals, or even by mass hysteria, those accused were often met with death, with women most often being the victims and the accusers.

The imagery depicted in pop culture today draws from the lore of numerous locations and cultures, but the most common depictions draw from European fairy tales and the historical events of the Salem Witch trials in Colonial Massachusetts. While the concept of Halloween and witches are much more secular with a candy focus, witch hunts and the belief in black magic persist to this day, actually growing in certain areas.
