Faceless design: The doll is traditionally made without a face, often with a cross made of thread in its place, to prevent an evil spirit from entering it.
Amulet function: Motankas were believed to protect homes and families from misfortune, with special dolls made for newborns, brides, and for healing illnesses.
Symbolic roles: Besides being a protective charm, motankas symbolized female wisdom, family lineage, and continuity. They were often passed down from mother to daughter.
