Popularly associated with Asian school uniforms and idol culture today, the sailor suit is derived from the British Royal Navy uniform. Mostly ceremonial today, the suit had become popularized as youth fashion when a smaller version was given to Prince Albert in 1846, with later depictions in kid's media including Popeye and Donald Duck.

With the rise of more prudish cultural sensitivities in the Victorian Era, Peter Thomson (a tailor based in New York and Philadelphia) promoted his school uniform based on the style as "good taste for girls" around 1900. Dresses with sailor aesthetics were already growing in popularity, but the standardization of style, as well as customization of material (linen for summer or wool for winter), made the style longstanding. As East Asia moved towards modernizing and westernizing, the adoption of these uniforms replaced the traditional dress in schools, allowing females to partake in more activities as a byproduct. In modern times, schools and individuals alter the style to match school, team or individual identity, and is also seen frequently in idol culture and anime depictions.
