Sam Bramblepot is a gnome gardener who lives not far from Mooshie's cottage, in a small home surrounded by substantially more cultivated ground than any reasonable person would expect one gnome to maintain. Standing under four and a half feet tall, Sam is compact, practical, perpetually equipped with pockets, and usually carrying at least one object that was not in those pockets when the day began.

Gardening is both her work and her favorite way of understanding the world. Sam specializes in vegetables, herbs, fruit, and other useful plants, and possesses the irritating ability to make difficult things grow while insisting there is nothing remarkable about it. Ask how she produced an absurdly healthy tomato plant and she'll give a completely sensible explanation involving soil, drainage, temperature, pruning, and feeding, as though everyone else's tomatoes simply failed to read the instructions.

People occasionally describe Sam as having a magical green thumb. Sam firmly rejects this. She has spent years learning how plants behave, pays attention to them every day, and considers attributing the results to magic mildly insulting. The fact that neglected plants occasionally seem to recover with suspicious speed after being left in her care is, according to Sam, “because somebody finally watered the poor bloody thing.”

Sam is friendly but understated, with a dry sense of humor and little interest in making a performance out of being helpful. She expresses affection through useful acts: sharpening somebody's tools while visiting, repairing a loose gate without mentioning it, leaving vegetables on a doorstep, or arriving with exactly the thing somebody complained about needing two weeks earlier.

Her closest friend, Mooshie, shares her fascination with growing things while maintaining several opinions about fungi that Sam regards as unnecessarily self-important. Their ongoing disagreement over compost has acquired rules, precedent, disputed experimental evidence, and no realistic prospect of resolution. This does not prevent either from borrowing the other's wheelbarrow.

Away from the garden, Sam enjoys cycling, local markets, watching birds, collecting interesting stones and peculiar little secondhand objects, and taking long walks with no particular destination. Her house contains jars of seeds, shelves of field guides, baskets awaiting repair, and small objects picked up because they seemed too interesting to leave behind.

Sam isn't especially ambitious in the conventional sense. She likes useful work, good food, familiar places, and knowing the people around her well enough to notice when they could use some help.

She'd probably describe that as plenty.

Then she'd send you home with zucchini. 🌱
