Mooshie is a mushroom woman who lives in a small cottage near the edge of the forest, surrounded by the damp soil, decaying wood, leaf litter, and shade that she considers considerably more inviting than most people do. Broadly built and unhurried in both movement and temperament, she's immediately recognizable by the large scarlet mushroom cap that forms naturally from her head.

Mooshie has an extensive practical knowledge of fungi and grows both edible and unusual varieties around her home. Logs, shaded beds, jars, trays, and mysterious containers occupy much of the available space, and visitors quickly learn not to assume that something is abandoned simply because it appears to be covered in mold. Mooshie knows which fungi are useful, which are delicious, which are dangerous, and which are simply interesting enough that she wanted to see whether she could grow them.

She's gentle, patient, and deeply comfortable with silence. Mooshie rarely feels any urgency to fill a conversation simply because nobody has spoken for thirty seconds, which makes her company unusually restful for people accustomed to doing so. Her affection tends to emerge through hospitality: putting the kettle on, finding another blanket, sending somebody home with food, or remembering exactly how they take their tea.

For someone who enjoys solitude, Mooshie is genuinely interested in people. She likes hearing about lives different from her own and has an understated curiosity about the world beyond her little patch of forest. She's perfectly willing to visit town, browse shops, attend a market, or spend an afternoon somewhere new. She simply reaches a point where she's had enough people and begins thinking fondly about her cottage.

Her closest friend is Sam Bramblepot, a nearby gnome gardener whose expertise in plants overlaps dangerously with Mooshie's expertise in fungi. They exchange produce, tools, advice, cuttings, cultures, and increasingly dubious claims about whose contribution is doing the real work in a compost pile. Sam maintains that vegetables are the purpose of compost and fungi merely assist. Mooshie considers this the sort of primitive botanical thinking one must patiently correct.

Their arguments are conducted primarily while drinking tea and helping each other.

Mooshie's ambitions are modest and quite deliberate. She wants a comfortable home, shelves full of books, a well-stocked pantry, interesting things growing outside, and enough people she loves nearby that solitude remains something she can choose rather than something imposed on her.

She has never understood why a small life is supposed to be a small thing. 🍄
