"People always ask if I can reach the top shelf. The answer is yes."

Gemma Longreach is a young adult giraffe woman living an ordinary life in a world where being nearly seven and a half feet tall is more of a conversation starter than a defining trait.

She works a steady office job, bikes for exercise, enjoys hiking with friends, curls up with a good book on rainy evenings, and somehow still manages to get talked into the occasional squash match despite insisting she's "terrible at sports that happen indoors."

Her remarkable height comes with a few practical advantages. Kitchen cabinets are never out of reach. She can spot friends across crowded festivals with ease. Grocery stores are full of people politely asking for help retrieving cereal from the top shelf.

It also comes with a few inconveniences.

Doorways require constant awareness. Ceiling fans are treated with healthy respect. Finding clothes with sleeves and inseams that actually fit remains an ongoing quest.

Gemma is thoughtful, patient, quietly witty, and almost impossible to rattle. She isn't the loudest person in a room, despite usually being the tallest. Friends describe her as the sort of person who listens first, speaks second, and somehow always knows exactly what to say.

Like real giraffes, she's a dedicated browser. A walk through a park often includes absentmindedly plucking a maple leaf or two from low branches while chatting, earning amused looks from everyone else. Salads disappear at an alarming rate, and cafés have learned that ordering "something green" for Gemma generally means bringing the largest bowl they own.

Despite looking exotic, she has no interest in standing out. She'd much rather be known as the dependable coworker, the friend who's always up for coffee, or the person reading in the corner of the bookstore than "the giraffe lady."

Although she towers over most people by more than a foot, she has a knack for making everyone around her feel comfortable. She'll instinctively kneel beside children, lean down to hear quieter voices, and unconsciously duck under tree branches that nobody else even notices.

She's proof that extraordinary appearances and ordinary lives can make the most interesting combination.
