Illustration → 3D / Photoreal Slider for SDXL

“The most useful result is often somewhere between illustration and photograph.”

Realize brings illustrated characters, creatures, objects, and worlds into dimensional form.

At positive weights, Realize progressively introduces physical volume, lighting, depth, material response, environmental detail, and photographic rendering into illustrated imagery. Depending on the subject, checkpoint, prompt and strength, the transition can move from illustration → dimensional illustration → polished 3D rendering → photorealistic reinterpretation.

But becoming a photograph isn't necessarily the point.

One of Realize's most interesting abilities is preserving parts of an illustration's original visual language as it becomes increasingly physical. Exaggerated anatomy, unusual silhouettes, stylized faces, costume designs, architecture and other deliberately impossible features can survive surprisingly far into the transition. The result can look less like “a photograph replacing a drawing” and more like the illustrated thing itself has acquired volume, materials and real light.

That intermediate territory is a major part of Realize's useful range.

Realize works in both txt2img and img2img, but source-guided img2img is particularly fun: give it an existing comic, anime, cartoon, fantasy or otherwise stylized illustration and explore what that world might look like if it became physically tangible.

The effect isn't restricted to people. Testing produced meaningful transitions across characters, creatures, robots, armor, objects, architecture and complete environments. Materials, lighting and surroundings can participate in the realization along with the central subject rather than simply receiving a photographic texture pass.

Suggested weights

For Realize v4, think of the weights as an exploration range rather than fixed presets:

+4 is a legitimate working weight, not merely a stress test. Some subjects become convincingly photographic there while others reach their best balance earlier.

For illustrated source images, try roughly:

Denoise: 0.40 – 0.60
Realize: +1 – +4

0.50 was the fixed denoise used for the controlled comparative img2img evaluation. Our broader experiments also produced useful results around the surrounding 0.40–0.60 range.

The two controls do different things:

LoRA weight = how strongly Realize pushes the representation.
Denoise = how much freedom the generation has to depart from the source.

Don't assume that raising one is equivalent to raising the other.

For preservation, I would start around +1.5–2.5 / 0.40–0.50 and work upward from there.

And try your source both with its descriptive prompt and with an otherwise empty positive prompt. Realize can produce substantial transformations without requiring explicit “photorealistic / RAW photograph / realistic” prompting.

What can you do with it?

Realize illustrated characters.
Take anime, comics, cartoons, concept art or stylized fantasy characters toward dimensional or photographic rendering while attempting to retain the things that made the design distinctive.

Make impossible things physical.
Oversized eyes, exaggerated proportions, strange creatures and deliberately stylized silhouettes don't necessarily have to disappear when realism arrives. Realize can turn them into something that looks physically rendered while remaining impossible.

Bring illustrated worlds with them.
Buildings, landscapes, streets, machinery, vegetation and other environmental elements can undergo the same dimensional transition as the subject.

Find the hybrid.
Stop halfway. A dimensional comic character, physically illuminated anime figure, rendered fantasy creature or tangible cartoon environment may be considerably more interesting than pushing all the way to photography.

Use it as an art-direction tool.
A single concept can be explored across graphic, illustrated, rendered and photographic interpretations without rewriting the underlying idea.

Realize existing artwork with img2img.
This is one of the LoRA's strongest applications. Starting from an illustration gives Realize an existing design, composition and visual language to reinterpret rather than asking it to invent everything from text.

A note about fidelity

Realize is a creative realization and reinterpretation tool, not an identity-preservation system.

As strength increases, it may reinterpret clothing, accessories, materials, faces, anatomy or composition. An image can become beautifully and convincingly physical while quietly ceasing to reproduce some part of the original design.

If preserving a particular feature matters, use the lowest LoRA weight and denoise that gives you the amount of realization you want.

Very stylized characters can occasionally become doll-, figurine- or collectible-like rather than living people. Strong weights can also introduce material substitutions or costume changes, and some tested armor subjects developed helmets or face coverings at high strength.

The negative pole is not intended as an equally powerful inverse slider. It can reinforce graphic qualities, flat shading and stylization, but Realize's primary and most dependable function is the positive illustration → dimensional/physical direction.
