Born María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga, Remedios Varo (16 December 1908 – 8 October 1963) was a Spanish surrealist and neo-medievalist painter, writer, and graphic artist. Her work features dreamlike, often dystopian worlds where science, mysticism, and magic mix together. Varo found inspiration in a variety of directions, from contemporary surrealist and avant-garde artists to historical painters like Hieronymus Bosch, Francisco Goya, and El Greco, resulting in a highly unique and recognizable style. A contemporary and friend of Leonora Carrington, Varo is one of the great female names in surrealism.
