Dove Olivia Cameron, born January 5, 1996, in Bainbridge Island, WA, is an American actress and singer/songwriter. As a child, Cameron sang in choir and appeared in numerous productions at Bainbridge Performing Arts, making a name for herself in the local theater circuit. Her family later moved to Los Angeles, where she began pursuing a professional acting career. In 2012, with a handful of television credits (“The Mentalist,” “Shameless,” “Malibu Country”) under her belt, Cameron was cast as Alanna in the Disney Channel sitcom “Bits and Pieces.” However, by 2013, it was retooled into a different show altogether: “Liv and Maddie,” with Cameron now playing the dual role of twin sisters Liv and Maddie Rooney. The show aired from 2013-2017, earning Cameron a Daytime Emmy Award in 2018 for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Program. During this time, Cameron also starred as Mal, daughter of classic Disney villainness Maleficent, in the Disney Channel's “Descendants” (2015), the first film in a franchise consisting of three live-action sequels, a live-action short film, an animated sequel, and an animated series. Cameron would reprise her role in all of the aforementioned projects except for 2024's "Descendants: The Rise of Red," which included none of the original main cast. Cameron’s other notable credits include NBC’s “Hairspray Live!” (2016); the Disney Channel original movie "Cloud 9" (2014); the films “Barely Lethal” (2015), “Dumplin” (2018), and “Vengeance” (2022); the television series “Marvel Rising: Initiation,” “History of the World: Part II,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and “Schmigadoon!”; and the stage productions “Clueless,” “Les Misérables,” “Mamma Mia!,” and “The Light in the Piazza.” Cameron performed 12 of 13 tracks on the “Liv and Maddie” soundtrack and was the primary vocalist on four additional songs from the show. She also featured heavily on all three “Descendants” soundtracks, the first of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2015, Cameron and “Liv and Maddie” co-star Ryan McCartan formed the pop duo The Girl and the Dreamcatcher, but they disbanded soon after the release of their debut EP, “Negatives” (2016). Cameron's first solo recording, “Bloodshot/Waste," arrived in 2019. More singles - including collaborations with Diplo and Marshmello - followed, with Cameron embarking on her first concert tour in 2021. Her 2022 single “Boyfriend" - a dark, sultry track that resonated with the LGBTQ+ community due to its lyrics involving same-sex attraction - became her unlikely musical breakthrough, soaring to No. 2 on Top 40 radio and No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cameron went on to win Best New Artist and Video for Good (for her next single, “Breakfast”) at the MTV Video Music Awards, New Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist at the GLAAD Media Awards, and Favorite Breakout Artist at the Kids’ Choice Awards. The first half of her debut studio album, “Alchemical,” was released in December 2023; the second volume is due in 2024.
