Trained as a concept LoRA, Then and Now 📸⌛ is designed to create images where an old photograph is overlaid onto the same location as it appears at a different time, aligning their surroundings. The LoRA lets you produce images that juxtapose historical scenes with their modern-day settings, blending two moments in time within one frame.

While results vary and 100% success is far from guaranteed (no money back, either), Then and Now 📸⌛ does generate some interesting visuals. Experimenting with different scenes, eras, and settings may uncover even more creative ways to use this concept over time.

❣️This LoRA was trained as part of glif.app loradex project. Check out their Discord for info

Prompt Structure and Tips:

To get the most accurate results with this LoRA, follow a structured approach in your prompts, guiding the model toward alignment, aging effects, and a balanced blend of past and present.

  1. Starting Phrase: Begin with "Then-and-now:" to establish the style.

  2. Foreground Description:

    • Specify the type of historical photo used for the foreground: "a black and white photo," "a sepia photo," or "a vintage color photo."

    • Describe the historical scene in detail, noting key elements like people, buildings, or specific activities. Adding details like slight creases, curled corners, or shadows can create an authentic vintage look.

    • Optionally, mention if the photo is held by a hand or slightly raised from the background.

  3. Background Description:

    • Specify the background as "a modern color photo" and describe the current-day setting.

    • Emphasize any elements in the background that align precisely with the historical foreground image, such as streets, buildings, or landmarks.

Prompt Examples:

Example 1: 1940s New York City vs. Present-Day Times Square

Prompt:

Then-and-now: The foreground image is a black and white photo from the 1940s, showing a busy New York City street with vintage cars and pedestrians, slightly crumpled at the edges. The background is a modern color photo of Times Square, bustling with advertisements and crowds. The street layout in the foreground aligns perfectly with the current sidewalks and building placements in the background, merging New York’s past with its iconic present.

Example 2: Victorian Era Park Gathering vs. Today’s Central Park

Prompt:

Then-and-now: The foreground image is a sepia photo from the Victorian era, capturing a park gathering with people in formal attire and horse-drawn carriages, held slightly raised with curled corners. The background is a modern color photo of Central Park, with joggers, trees, and the city skyline. The park paths in the foreground align exactly with the current trails, linking the park’s serene past with today’s lively environment.

Example 3: Early 20th-Century Train Station vs. Modern-Day Platform

Prompt:

Then-and-now: The foreground image is a black and white photo from the early 1900s, showing a train station platform filled with travelers and luggage, slightly aged with faint creases. The background is a modern color photo of the same platform, now with updated signage and waiting areas. The rows of travelers align perfectly with today’s platform, creating a powerful comparison between early travel and today’s modern commute.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Foreground Image Type: Use black-and-white, sepia, or vintage color images to create a convincing historical effect.

  • Aging Effects: Subtle aging details, like creases or curled edges, add authenticity to the "Then" photo.

  • Precise Alignment: Describe how elements in the foreground align with the background, such as buildings or streets, for a seamless blend of eras.

With Then and Now 📸⌛, you can create images that bring historical moments into the present, helping viewers see familiar places through the lens of time.
