Coercive Rhymes, Revolting Crimes

This social media campaign aims to raise awareness of the signs of coercive control (CC). It is a crime that affects millions of people around the world, but is difficult to spot, even when it's happening to you.

We wanted to use realistic and super-realistic images that demonstrate the emotional experience of coercive control. We created a poem which we adjusted for rhythm using ChatGPT and further edited again by humans. The poem was then used to generate prompts for images which were fed into image2vid for more consistent look and feel. The clips were edited together to form a narrative. The poem was voiced using Eleven Labs.

We tried to generalise the experience across races and ages. The poem is based on real world experiences of people experiencing CC, which is according to national surveys about 65% female 35% male, and hence written from the female perspective. It's very much prevalent in all gender configurations and relationships that extend beyond intimate to familial or even workplaces. We showed the video to support workers who work with survivors of CC for feedback, to ensure the message would be impactful but to reduce the risk of triggering survivors of CC.
